DEVELOPMENT SUMMARY >
The Story Behind The Sails dates back to Spinnaker founder Mr. Ken Taylor's youth when he worked alongside his family in their boatbuilding business "J.J. Taylor and Sons" in Toronto, on the shore of Lake Ontario (Ken's father, William Taylor, was one of the "Sons"). It may be fair to say that building and boating are in Ken's blood. A number of "J.J. Taylor and Sons" exceptional hand crafted wooden motorboats are exhibited at antique boat shows throughout Canada and the US. "Heldina II" has been recently restored and was the fastest boat of it's class in the world (built 1915). Ken and his brother James were also passionate about their sailing out of the RCYC (Royal Canadian Yacht Club) - also on the shores of Lake Ontario.
Kenneth Taylor
Ken with 2 children, Miami 1970
Mr. Ken Taylor graduated with an Engineering and Business degree from the University of Toronto, followed by a Masters Degree in Business from Wharton School of Finance. After careers in Consulting (Coopers & Lybrand) and Vice President Finance and Vice President Land Development posts (Cadillac Fairview), it was time for Ken to chart his own course. He had taken his family to live in Miami and the Bahamas for a number of years, and without fully dusting the sand from their toes, he and Joan moved their family back to Toronto.
Joan Taylor
Joan with their children, Great Harbor Cay, Bahamas 1971
The story behind Spinnaker's founder also has "her" own story. Joan Taylor, Ken's wife, acquired her own passion for building and design from her childhood as she watched her father James Towers, an architect, design commercial financial institutions across Canada for the Bank of Nova Scotia. Joan pursued her 2nd career, interior design, while their young children were in school. Ken and Joan's combined talents for envisioning and creating are what continue to power Spinnaker's vision today.

It all began in Hilton Head
The creation of resorts on Hilton Head started in the late 70's when the entire family vacationed on the island. Hilton Head's appeal for the family was the activities: ocean activities, swimming, tennis, cycling, inline skating and golf - and the exceptional beach and island beauty.
Spinnaker Resorts was founded shortly after these initial family visits (in 1982) with its first purpose built timeshare in Shipyard plantation named "Spinnaker". This 48 unit 2 bedroom villa community lines the 7th hole of Brigantine / Shipyard Golf Course fairway.
Spinnaker Resorts has subsequently developed, marketed and sold five (5) other timeshare properties on the island including Carolina Club, Southwind, Egret Point, Southwind II and Waterside. With a total of over 464 villas built on Hilton Head, Spinnaker Resorts is currently in the final stages of phase one of development of Bluewater Resort & Marina located on the island's north end, across from Pinckney Reserve on the intercoastal waterway. Thirty (30) luxury two (2) and three (3) bedroom villas are slated for occupancy in August 2007.
In 1990 Ken developed St. James Place in Beaver Creek, Colorado, an exceptional resort at the base of Vail's Beaver Creek Ski Resort - augmenting the village's European ambiance.
Other projects currently in the works include Royal Floridian South - a 53 unit beachfront project on Ormond Beach. This purpose built resort is only the 2nd in Ormond Beach and it promises to be spectacular. Palace View South in Branson was just completed in 2006 and promises to be another Five Star designation recipient.

He is personally committed to developing exceptional resorts for the enjoyment of vacationing Spinnaker owners. He is also dedicated to ensuring that Spinnaker owner fees are not exorbitant, thus making vacations available for family enjoyment.
